Growing up, you might have heard ''Safety brings first aid to the uninjured." The World Day for Safety and Health at workplace, aims to strengthen the national occupational safety and health (OSH) systems to build resilience, in order to face crises now and in future, drawing on lessons learned from past events.
According to International Labour Organisation, (ILO)
everyday about 6000 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work related diseases; more than 2.3 million deaths per year. In addition, 317 million accidents occur at the work annually.
The human cost of this daily adversity is vast and economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4% of global gross domestic product.

The World day for safety and Health at workplace is an annual international campaign which is observed to ensure workers to adopt all safety measures at work, to prevent severe effects of disease caused due to it. It believes safe and healthy working conditions are the fundamentals to decent work and aims to prevent occupational accidents and diseases. Through a system of defining rights, responsibilities and securing working environment where the highest priority is accorded to the principle of prevention, health perils could be minimalised.
By Improving the capacity to collect reliable health data, creating awareness and identifying workplace hazards, maintaining secured means of access to workplace, preparing emergency plans, providing first aid training, ensuring a clear and easy route to emergency exists and equipments, safety could be ensured.

The COVID-19 pandemic, spreading across the world, has rendered a large population of workforce unable to commute to work as to mitigate the spread of virus. Employees, in consultation with workers and their representatives should plan and implement measures to prevent the spread of this disease at the workplace through engineering and administrative controls.
In work areas at high risk, accessing methods of regular hand hygiene; providing medical masks, disposable gloves, personal protection equipments; promoting good respiratory hygiene in workplace and maintaining a strict social distancing of ateast  2 yards mask up the symptoms of infection. Moreover, maintaining safety purges environment of possible risks.
Besides, the industrial health hazards including physical ( noise, radiations etc.) ; chemical ( gases, fumes, dust); biological; psychological; mechanical and ergonomical hazards are the major hurdles in the way of achieving prevention and safety.
To ensure we don't become an afterthought, we must ensure safety to be our first thought. Always remember, better safe than sorry.
